2007 Hardcovered, with satin ribbon.    Pre-owned, in near fine condition.

Double Game, originally issued in 1999 in larger format, was the first important book by French artist Sophie Calle to be published in English.  This compact  version (5.5" x 7.75") is identical in content to the first and was published to coincide with the 52nd Venice Biennale, at which Calle represented France.

The artist's statement on the back of the book, explains: "In his novel Leviathan, Paul Auster thanks me for having authorized him to mingle fact with fiction.  And indeed, on pages 60 to 67 of his book, he uses a number of episodes from my life to create a fictive character named Maria.  Intrigued by this double, I decided to turn Paul Auster's novel into a game and to make my own particular mixture of reality and fiction."   There are numerous photo illustrations, in black and white and color, throughout.

Sophie Calle works with photography, performance and literature.  Her work has been show at galleries and museums throughout the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which hosted a major retrospective of her work in 2005.
