Short on time but long on interest?

Every month the Westport Book Shop's Short Story Club

will get together to discuss another classic or

contemporary short story or pair of stories

Meets at the Westport Book Shop on

the fourth Wednesday of every month

from 6:00 to 7:30pm

Come to one session, some, or all, it's up to you!

Space is limited; registration is required.

Each month's short story selection(s) will be announced by or around the first day of the month, and registration for that month's session will open when the email announcing that month's selection goes out. Make sure you are on our email list (use the "Contact Us" form at the bottom of the page), so you'll be among the first to know!

The next session of the Short Story Club will be Wednesday, February 25,2026.

We'll be discussing two stories by Nobel Prize-winning author Alice Munro from her 2001 collection Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage:

📖   "What is Remembered", and

📖   "The Bear Came Over the Mountain"

Registration for each Short Story Club session is required, as space is limited.  To register, please phone the Westport Book Shop at 203-349-5141 or send an email to:  RSVP@westportbooksaleventures.org

Story selections usually are available at your local library, either singly or as part of a compilation, and often are available online. The Westport Book Shop will have copies of each month's stories available to borrow.  You may also be able to obtain printouts of most stories at The Westport Library, for a modest fee of $0.15 per page.

We look forward to another thought-provoking session!

An Afternoon with best-selling children's author
Lauren Tarshis
Sunday, March 15, 2026 at 3:00 p.m.
at the Westport Library

Lauren Tarshis 2025.jpg

Celebrate the Westport Book Shop's 5th Anniversary with a presentation and book-signing by Lauren Tarshis, best-selling author of the I Survived children's book series.

I Survived is an historical fiction book series for young readers that shares the stories of some of the world's most extraordinary events, told through the eyes of young characters who show resilience and strength in the midst of unimaginable disasters, and live to tell the tale. Author Lauren Tarshis will talk about some of her latest stories in the I Survived series, including I Survived the Dust Bowl, 1935, and will share insights into her process of researching and writing her books.

In addition to young reader chapter books, select I Survived titles are available as graphic novels, including the most recent I Survived The California Wildfires, 2018, which is being released this February.

Tarshis Event

This is a ticketed event — each person attending the event must have a ticket.  All proceeds from this event benefit the Westport Book Shop.

  • Children's tickets are $10, and each $10 ticket includes a gift of one I Survived book.

  • Chaperone tickets (or tickets for attendees who do not want a book) are $5.00 each.

  • Children under age 5 may attend for free, but need to be registered for a free ticket.

To get tickets, go to https://LaurenTarshisMarch15.eventbrite.com

Bonus: before Lauren Tarshis' presentation begins, audience members can test their knowledge of the I Survived series by playing a special game of "Kahoot!" with us — a trivia game that's fun for all ages! The first place winner of the I Survived Kahoot! trivia game will win a one-hour Sunday morning session (date and time TBD) with Lauren Tarshis at the Westport Book Shop, where the winner and four of their guests can talk with Lauren and ask questions about their favorite I Survived stories. Second and third place winners will receive I Survived and Westport Book Shop prize bundles. Players must be present at the event to win.

To play the I Survived Kahoot! trivia game, participants will need to bring their own internet-enabled mobile phone, tablet or laptop, and logon at kahoot.it, or download the Kahoot! app, before the game begins. Event ticket holders will be given the "Game PIN" to participate in the I Surivived Kahoot! game at the start of this event.

PLEASE NOTE:

This is NOT a drop-off event — all children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

This event takes place at The Westport Library Trefz Forum.  Guest check-in and seating will begin at 2:30 p.m. Please arrive early to allow time to register attendance, receive a book, find a seat, and logon to Kahoot!

This event will begin promptly at 3:00 p.m.

Books will also be available for purchase at the event.

Join us for a fun and informative afternoon!

A benefit event
to help sustain our employment program and grow our community

Since opening the Westport Book Shop in early 2021, we have provided over 10,500 hours of paid part-time employment and job training for more than a dozen adults and young adults with disabilities.  Our employees are learning and exercising workplace skills that are transferable to other business and retail environments, and they have the opportunity for frequent everyday interaction with the community. Over this time, we have also provided more than $200,000 of support to The Westport Library.

On March 13, 2025, we hosted a benefit we called Growing Our Community, to raise funds to ensure we continue to have a solid financial foundation, and to support the potential growth or our employment program.  Guests enjoyed live music performed by members of the Staples High School Jazz Ensemble, light bites & beverages, a paddle raise, and both a live and silent auction of a variety of unique books, vinyl, artworks, and experiences.

If you missed the benefit, you can still support our efforts:  click here to donate.  Thank you
