Upcoming Westport Book Shop Events

Short Story Club at the Book Shop

valentine-2.png

Short on time but long on interest?

Every month the Westport Book Shop's Short Story Club

will get together to discuss another classic or

contemporary short story or pair of stories

Meets at the Westport Book Shop on

the fourth Thursday of every month

from 6:00 to 7:30pm

Come to one session, some, or all, it's up to you!

Space is limited; registration is required.

Each month's short story selection will be announced by or around the first day of the month, and registration for that month's session will open when the email announcing that month's selection goes out. Make sure you are on our email list (use the "Contact Us" form at the bottom of the page), so you'll be among the first to know!

The next session of the Short Story Club will be Thursday, October 23, 2025.  We will be discussing three stories for Halloween:

The very short classic "The Tell-Tale Heart" (1843) by Edgar Allan Poe,

"The Bees" (2002) by Dan Chaon, and

"What They Left Behind" (2003) by Stephen King

Registration for each Short Story Club session is required, as space is limited.  To register, please phone the Westport Book Shop at 203-349-5141 or send an email to:  RSVP@westportbooksaleventures.org

Story selections usually are available at your local library, either singly or as part of a compilation, and often are available online. The Westport Book Shop will have copies of each month's stories available to borrow.  You may also be able to obtain printouts of most stories at The Westport Library, for a modest fee of $0.15 per page.  This month, "The Tell-Tale Heart" is readily available in a variety of Poe or horror anthologies, as well as online. "The Bees" may be found online through the website writingatlas.com, and also in the anthology Poe's Children.  Stephen King's story may be found in his story collection Just After Sunset, and also as part of an anthology titled Transgressions: Vol. 2.

We look forward to another great discussion! Halloween costumes would be much appreciated this  month (costumes are not required, but they would be fun!).

A benefit event
to help sustain our employment program and grow our community

Since opening the Westport Book Shop in early 2021, we have provided over 10,500 hours of paid part-time employment and job training for more than a dozen adults and young adults with disabilities.  Our employees are learning and exercising workplace skills that are transferable to other business and retail environments, and they have the opportunity for frequent everyday interaction with the community. Over this time, we have also provided more than $200,000 of support to The Westport Library.

On March 13, 2025, we hosted a benefit we called Growing Our Community, to raise funds to ensure we continue to have a solid financial foundation, and to support the potential growth or our employment program.  Guests enjoyed live music performed by members of the Staples High School Jazz Ensemble, light bites & beverages, a paddle raise, and both a live and silent auction of a variety of unique books, vinyl, artworks, and experiences.

If you missed the benefit, you can still support our efforts:  click here to donate.  Thank you
