Westport Book Shop Welcomes Artist Herm Freeman for February 2024 Art Exhibit

Westport, CT, February 3, 2024 — The Westport Book Shop is pleased to welcome as guest exhibitor at the book shop's Drew Friedman Art Place for the month of February, local artist Herm Freeman. Herm is exhibiting recent paintings of his landscapes, often inspired by Cezanne, Soutine and villages in the south of France.

“These days, I’m not so sure where the villages I’m painting come from. In fact, that seems to be the point: let the paint go where it’s going…it leads and I follow where it goes. Sometimes I feel I’d like to live in those paintings,” says Herm, “…but that’s art for you…”

Herm Freeman studied Painting at Queens College of the City University of New York, and earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from Indiana University in 1971.  He has taught art in Connecticut schools since 1973, and exhibited works throughout the northeast New England / NYC area and in Europe for over 40 years.  Herm was represented for years by Phil Demise’s ‘a gallery’ in New York City.

Herm was awarded “Best in Show” at Silvermine’s prestigious 51st Art of the Northeast USA Annual Exhibition.  In 2016, he showed 20 years of his landscape paintings at the Westport Library’s Great Hall, and he has been a member of the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County.  His work is in many collections throughout the northeast. He maintained a working studio at The Knowlton in Bridgeport, and these days works from his home studio.

The Westport Book Shop will hold a reception for Herm Freeman and his exhibit on Wednesday evening, February 14, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Space is limited; please RSVP to the Book Shop at 203-349-5141 or by email to bookshop@westportbooksaleventures.org

Herm Freeman's artwork will be on exhibit at the Book Shop through February 29, 2024. All work on display is available for purchase.

Westport Book Shop, a nonprofit independent used book store, is downtown Westport’s only source for gently used and antiquarian books, vintage vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and audio books. It is located at 23 Jesup Road, right across Jesup Green from the Westport Library.

The Book Shop’s “Drew Friedman Art Place” is an area of the store dedicated to exhibiting the work of community artists year-round, on a rotating basis. Miggs Burroughs, a Trustee of the Drew Friedman Community Arts Center, and a founding member of The Artists Collective of Westport, curates these exhibits, which change monthly.
