Westport, CT, November 2, 2023 — The Westport Book Shop is pleased to welcome as guest exhibitor at the book shop's Drew Friedman Art Place for the month of November, local painter and mixed media artist Dionne Pia.
Dionne is exhibiting two of her large scale paintings, "Brave New World", made in acrylics and mixed media on canvas, and "Galaxy", made in acrylics on canvas.
Dionne’s current body of work celebrates a new phase and is a shift from figurative
representation to an invitation for viewers to experience the story within the frame. Typically starting with one-word subjects mined for deeper meaning, Dionne explores the essence of a subject and distills it into a dynamic visual poem.
There is an energetic play of saturated color and bold imagery that come to the surface through many layers of painted and digital collage. The imagery is a fusion of historic and contemporary culture in an arrangement of unexpected associations and emotions. Underlying themes include grief, loss, protection, hope and even humor.
Dionne commented, “The act of making a painting fuels my curiosity; curiosity is the gateway to empathy. In this digital, heads-down culture all too often people forget about the natural world we
share with the plant and animal kingdom. In my work I am deconstructing ideas of human rank superiority and staging a view that includes points of view from other cultures and other beings.”
Dionne holds a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, and attended the RISD European Honors Program in Italy. She has also studied Russian icon painting, and landscape graphics. Dionne is a member of the Artists Collective of Westport. Her work has been exhibited in many shows throughout Connecticut.
Dionne Pia's artwork will be on exhibit at the Book Shop through November 30, 2023. All work on display is available for purchase.
